Garden City - (WALK) All is calm all is bright at Roosevelt Field Mall, say Nassau County police, after the sharp sound of a falling display case set off panic among shoppers on Christmas Eve.
Three people suffered minor injures as shoppers believed gun shots were fired and fled the mall at about 1:15 p.m.
Police quickly responded to the site, near Macy's, where store security had taken an allged shoplifter, Aaron Darby, 19, into custody moments before. The display fell to the floor after a scuffle among three young men, according to authorities.
The mall was closed for about 15 minutes and reopened after police determined there was no danger to shoppers. Police, including helicopter crews had reported to the scene, according to witnesses.
Darby, of West Hempstead, was released Wednesday, and scheduled to return to court January 7.
Darby also faces charges in an incident on September 21, and will return to court again on January 14 to face charges of criminal trespass, attempted assault and resisting arrest.
